Using an email-based iMessage account is the same as using a phone-based one you can message anyone using iMessage, even by their phone number. At the bottom, you can choose which one you prefer to use when messaging new people.
If you have two contacts, such as your Apple ID and your phone number, you can receive messages on both accounts.
